Chicago is like a huge pizza they say. And they are quite good over there. Take a walk from West Diversey Parkway to Belden Avenue. You'll notice that the Capone years are far-gone while you quench your thirst still at peace with the law and order authority.
You won't miss the Sears Towers, but there is more to the city's architecture. The city was built on swamps on the banks of Lake Michigan. After a fire nearly destroyed it in 1871, Chicago's landscape and inhabitable areas were redesigned by the brightest architectural modern minds : Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Dankmar Adler, Martin Roche, David Adler, Helmut Jahn... Chicago takes a great pride in its architectural tradition. The 1905 Jacques Marquette building designed by William Holabird and Martin Roche was a tremendous accomplishment back then. See also the Rookery Building, the Field Building, the Marina City...
And, search for the greatest painters masterpieces, they're all over the place.
